Three Online Advertising Tools that Do Not Work

By SusanCarroll

Ask any successful online advertiser what types of advertising should not be used and these 3 will always appear on the list:

Don't Use:

  • bad pop-ups
  • spamming
  • sneaky ads which download "infecting software"

Unfortunately many new online advertisers don't know or understand just how bad using any of these 3 tricks really is so I'll explain.

Bad pop-ups

One of the most common online promotional tools used In the internet marketing niche is pop-ups. And while most people in that niche have come to expect them because they have proven to be effective in many instances, the use of bad pop-ups has just the opposite effect.

What are bad pop-ups?

Bad Pop-Ups Are:

  • multiple pop-ups when someone tries to leave your web site or web page
  • having a pop-up appear on every page of your site when someone visits it
  • having a pop-up appear at a bad time when someone is reading the page content
  • pop-ups that cover the content and can't be closed

Using pop-ups in the ways mentioned above will annoy and frustrate your site visitor. And annoying and frustrating your site visitors is not usually the best way to market your website.

Spamming

Another very  over used online advertising tool is SPAM. That's where someone sends out bulk emails to a list of harvested email addresses. In addition to sending unexpected and unwanted email, many spammers are even more treacherous because they try to forge where the email is sent from. Spamming is illegal and there are many laws against it. Those who have been found guilty of spamming have incurred thousands of dollars worth of fines and have had their email accounts shut down.

If you advertise your online business with spam you're asking for trouble. If you're caught you will lose your email account and it may cost you more in fines than the profits you made.

Malicious Software

Not only are bad pop-ups and spam emails bad online advertising techniques, the use of malicious software like spyware is the most hideous. Spyware is often used for commercial gain because it can deliver unsolicited pop-up advertisements, steal personal information (including financial information such as credit card numbers), monitor web-browsing activity for marketing purposes, or route HTTP requests to advertising sites.

Spyware and other form of malicious software are used either to intimidate and force people to make a purchase, steal from them or turn their computer into a worthless paperweight. Everyone who has ever experienced a malicious software attack on their computer would probably like to inflict as much pain as possible on the person responsible. And making people want to hurt you isn't good for your business.

Conclusion

People you are targeting with your online advertising can get annoyed, mad or worse if you use any of the 3 advertising techniques listed above. And these tricks will not get you loyal and happy customers.

To build your business, get happy customers and make money you must use good, legal advertising techniques. There are many forms of good online advertising methods available and many of them don't require you to spend money. You just need to learn about them.

So please...

Don't waste your time, money and reputation by using any of the online advertising methods mentioned in this article.

I hope you learned something from reading this blog. Please remember to leave a comment and share it with others.
